Sri Lanka marks another victory against the host England

Sri Lanka marks yet another victory in CWC against the host England

In an extraordinary back-and-forth contest, it was Sri Lanka that emerged victorious against the fancied England side by 20 runs at Headingley on Friday.

Karunarathne won the toss but chose to bat, perhaps swayed away by a pitch that looked slower than he expected. Sri Lanka huffed and puffed to 232 but that wasn’t going to challenge this England side, even if there was spin for Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid in the first innings.

Batting first, Sri Lanka lost two quick wickets initially. But Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis resurrected their innings. But following their dismissals, they crumbled again, with Angelo Mathews managing just a gritty 85 to help them post a decent 232/9.

Lasith Malinga picked up two early wickets for Sri Lanka to give them a chance. Joe Root’s half-century put England in charge. But the veteran’s wickets in the middle, followed by Dhananjaya de Silva’s double break put Sri Lanka on the brink of victory. Ben Stokes nearly brought England home but Nuwan Pradeep took the final wicket to complete the upset. This is how the game built up when some fairy players perform on the ground.

#ICC WC 2007 : SL beat ENG by 2 Runs
#ICC WC 2011 : SL beat ENG by 10 Wickets
CWC 2015 : SL beat ENG by 9 Wickets
#ICC WC 2019 : SL beat ENG by 20 Runs

Sri Lanka play their feet game to make a remarkable victory of the low scoring match against England and shows their class of being alive in the tournament. This could be possible when bowler make early wickets as Lasith Malinga did to restrict England player’s to a total of 213 in 50 overs. Malinga making things hot for England on spicy pitch. Loss of a couple of early wickets will put pressure on the middle order, something England have not experienced yet. If Lanka get Root now, match opens up!

“Great win by #srilanka no one gave them chance to win against the mighty English team. Malinga was at his best with the new ball as well old. #ENGvsSL #WorldCup” from Irfan Pathan.

“Well done Sri Lanka. Fantastic win. Malinga and Matthews, showing what experience can do in crunch situations. Makes the table interesting #ENGvSL” VVS Laxman.
